Animal Farm by George Orwell

Animal Farm cover

This read has been eerily describing the reality we’re living in right now. Orwell puts dystopia into words with unsettling clarity.

Characters like Snowball, Boxer, and Clover feel especially familiar: intelligent and hardworking, sensing that something is wrong but unable to fully articulate it- and because of that, they’re easy to exploit.

Then there’s Benjamin: intelligent but cynical. He sees the lies for what they are, yet chooses passivity.

Every character in this book is relatable, and the line “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others” hits differently today.

What’s striking is that Orwell was writing about his time back in 1945- and yet the story still holds up. It shows something fundamental about human nature: how power repeats itself, how life can be cyclical, and how easily “farm animals” can be manipulated. It showed how easy it is to manipulate, gaslight, and rewrite history.

The same script that worked in 1945 works even now:

  • Create a phantom enemy (“Snowball”).
  • Control propaganda (the “Sheep” and “Squealer”)- and with it, language and memory.
  • Normalize extreme labour.
  • Keep your presence limited and elevated; take credit for everything.
  • Maintain enforcers (“Dogs”).

This book will always be relevant. This book feels more important now than ever.
